UnemployedToad

Two hundred and six applications. Four replies. Three of those four were to say the role had been filled internally before it was ever posted.

Toad at the table with a laptop and a resume
The table. The laptop. The coffee that went cold at ten.

What I have been doing instead

Recent history, honestly stated

Mar to present

Refreshing an inbox

I have gotten very fast at it. I can tell from the loading animation whether anything came in, which is a skill nobody will ever pay me for.

Six weeks

Rewriting the same page

I moved my own name to the top, then to the left, then back. Somewhere in there I changed a font and felt, for about an hour, like a person with a plan.

Every Tuesday

Telling people it is going well

It is a short conversation and everybody involved would like it to stay short. I say there are a couple of things in motion. There are no things in motion.

Ongoing

Owning one shirt that is fine

It has been fine for four interviews now. At some point a shirt stops being clothing and becomes equipment.

Toad asleep on the table
Thursday, 19:40. Not asleep. Resting the head while thinking about the phrasing of a follow up.
Toad in an interview
Handed it over myself. They already had a copy.
Toad on a bus
The 40 minute ride back, still holding the thing.

The strange part

Written at the same table, later

The strange part is that I am busy. The days are completely full. They are full of the shape of work without any of the work in them, and by six I am tired in a way I cannot show anybody, because I have nothing to point at.

So I keep the spreadsheet. Two hundred and six rows, colour coded, sorted by date. It is the only document in the world right now with my name on it and somebody else's expectations in it, and I am not ready to close it.
